History of St Vigor's

Parish Churn of Fulbourn

St Vigor’s Church in Fulbourn dates back at least to Norman times, with pre-Conquest features like a Saxon cross-head and coffin lid discovered during the 1869 restoration  Uniquely dedicated to a Norman-on-Saint (St Vigor, Bishop of Bayeux, circa 537), it's one of only two churches in England with this dedication—the other being in Somerset

Architecturally, the church’s origins lie in the simple nave and chancel with a west tower, expanded in the 14th century by adding aisles, a north porch, and clerestory windows; the south transept was later added as a chantry chapel . In 1869, Sir Arthur Blomfield led a major restoration, introducing the north transept and extending the south transept into a Lady Chapel Today, St Vigor’s is Grade II* listed, featuring medieval and historic elements like a rare stone cadaver tomb of Rector John Caraway (d. 1441), early ecclesiastical brasses, and a striking 14th-century oak pulpit
